Rainbow Jam 2017 – Meet Jacob Peltola!

We are now a month away from the start of Rainbow Game Jam 2017! We are so excited to kick off the jam this year!

In the run up to Rainbow Game Jam 2017 we wanted to take this opportunity to share the work and voices of previous entrants of Rainbow Jam!

Today we have Jacob Peltola ( Twitteritch.io), developer of Rainbow Jam 2016 game Identi-Key!

Hi Jacob, Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Jacob Peltola, I work as a frontend developer utilizing emerging technology as interactive mediums and run my own game studio on the side in Boston.

Why did you take part in Rainbow Jam 2016?

A few of my friends were talking about it and I wanted to join in, they ended up not participating but I had a really neat symbolism idea I wanted to put to use as a quick mobile game prototype.

What were your highlights of Rainbow Jam 2016?

Seeing all the really different interpretations of Identity and their games, a few of my highlights were a few youtubers playing my game for about an hour trying to understand it from a psychological standpoint and getting advice from other jammers on my submission.

Last year the theme for Rainbow Jam was “Identity”, how do you feel your game explored that theme?

Identi-key is a game where you drop keys from the top of the screen to a lock on the bottom with randomized color matching; except it’s about a whole lot more.. we all solve problems in our day to day lives but some problems are easier for others to open. This idea made me randomize the colors of the key’s bow and blade to sometimes not match.. we are who we are and have to solve problems our own way, like having a blue head and a red body but only red keys can get through the red lock. “Non-conformity and acceptance of one’s self” is the key to happiness!

What advice do you have for someone who hasn’t taken part in Rainbow Jam, or any other game jam before?

Don’t stay up late, eat healthy, and if you’re not in it to have fun or learn/do something new go do something you’d enjoy instead.

Do you have anything else you would like to share?

A game called “Nightrunner”. It’s on itch and we’re almost in alpha!!: https://boxmountaingames.itch.io/night-runner
